In June of 2020, Polly Irungu launched Black Ladies Photographers with about 100 members and the hope that a lot more Black girls would obtain commissions and increased recognition for their work. “I didn’t really know that images was a space for me to be in, as I did not see myself in the earth of images or seriously any art areas for that motive,” Irungu reported about the impetus for the group in a recent job interview. “I consider with the operate that I’ve been carrying out, it is obviously shattering that. I just want to go on making this local community, celebrating these functions in the group, aiding nurture these photographers and get them to the upcoming amount, whichever that following stage appears like for them. But also to continue to choose up area in this sector, permitting individuals know what “Yes, we’re listed here,” and we photograph portraits, we photograph athletics, new music, fine artwork, and we photograph everything that you can imagine of, like architecture, true estate, outdoors, landscape, film, all of that is inside of this local community.
